Cognitive biases: Shortcuts do not always work perfectly; these shortcuts can turn into systematic thinking errors or biases. For example, perceiving a fast-moving shadow directly as 'danger,' even if it is a faulty generalization, ensured the survival of our primitive ancestors. Today, our first impressions or stereotypes are shaped by this principle.
According to the model developed by the American Nobel Prize-winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman, this situation is based on the conflict between two different systems (System 1 and System 2) in our minds:
System 1: It is the automatic, fast, emotional, and low-energy-consuming system. It manages shortcuts and biases.
Our brain chooses to evaluate data with pre-filtered patterns to avoid constantly running System 2, which performs heavy calculations, and to survive. In summary; shortcuts and biases are the strategy of using the brain's limited energy budget in the most efficient way.
System 2: It is the slow, logical, attention-requiring, and high-energy-consuming system. A significant amount of energy must be spent for analytical thinking.
