In Germany, the family is considered an element that should be involved in the school system and is seen as a part of school education.The educational levels of families have a decisive impact on the future of their children. Although the fact that this situation deepens class differences in society exposes the German education system to serious internal criticism, the positive effects of educated families on their children's education are also an undeniable reality.
The education system in Germany has, of course, created a solution to preempt such criticism. High-level schools accept children who wish to study there and are recommended by their previous school, without the requirement of an entrance exam. Thus, an equality of opportunity is offered at the start. However, the main issue is the ability of a student without family support to remain in school. Students who cannot adapt are gradually forced to either move to a lower-level school or graduate from a lower level, being directed toward vocational training that requires fewer qualifications rather than academic education. In other words, a child who cannot hold their own at the school's level without family support suffers a demotion in their education.
The practice of including the family in the education system assigns the family an active role in the child's education. Project assignments, research papers, foreign language trips abroad... If a child cannot receive support and feedback from their family and cannot manage their studies on their own—which is often the case—they gradually descend the rungs of the education system.
On the other hand, if the child matures and makes an effort on their own, the path to rising again, however difficult, is kept constantly open. An effect brought about by a system that keeps the child's school life and family in constant communication is that it not only ensures the child benefits from their family's knowledge, home library, and additional educational opportunities, but it also serves as a means for the family to encounter the topics of the modern education system.
This family-centered education system encompasses several generations within the household. Grandmothers, grandfathers, mothers, and fathers all become part of the child's education. It becomes possible for a child whose grandmother is a judge, grandfather is a politician, father is a doctor, and mother is a chemical engineer to have conversations at home about topics related to political science, chemistry, mathematics, philosophy, physics, or biology.Or, witnessing such a conversation becomes a part of that child's daily life. The concepts a child encounters in their natural environment greatly facilitate their adaptation to a high-level education system.
Matters such as theater, music recitals, and museum visits that are part of an educated family's social life, or paintings hanging on the walls of their home, conversations about art, having a musical instrument in the house, or one of the family members playing an instrument, it provides the child with the necessary foundation to become a successful member of the country they live in, as an individual developed within their own natural environment.
Explaining the differences between educated and uneducated families solely through economic disadvantages would be, at least for Germany, partially unfair. This is because families with these characteristics are also found within Germany's middle class. Visiting a concert or theater, having an occasional intellectual conversation at home, listening to calm music during dinner, having a few pieces of art on the walls—even if they are not originals—truly listening to the child when they speak and creating a shared topic of conversation, and being parents who read and study the books recommended at school together do not require significant amounts of money.
Because a school-related, social, and artistic dialogue either never occurs or remains very insufficient between a child who lacks these opportunities and their family, this child falls behind the system. If the family's attitude creates such a deep class difference even among children living within a developed country, you can imagine the class differences that will arise between developed and underdeveloped countries.
For all these reasons, the results of the research conducted are, of course, not surprising at all. Significant numerical differences are observed between the rates at which children living in Germany's ghetto neighborhoods complete a Gymnasium-level education to pursue academic professions and the success rates of children in these schools who live in neighborhoods with academically educated families.
Having a grandmother who is a judge or a library of 1,000 books in our home would certainly be very pleasant. However, to understand Plato's allegory of the cave, we no longer need a grandfather who keeps a 10-volume set of The Republic in his library. Because the doors to a completely different world have opened. Not being born into an entire network of knowledge, inherited from our ancestors, is no longer a sealed document that haunts us for the rest of our lives.
Because we have stepped across the threshold of a technological age where we can communicate directly with the knowledge in the universe, without any intermediaries. We only need to possess the ability and inner drive to know how to process information, to be curious, to ask the right questions, and to nourish the answers we receive with new questions.
