37 people detained in illegal betting operation across 8 provinces
A major blow has been dealt to illegal betting rings in simultaneous operations centered in Istanbul. A total of 37 suspects were apprehended by law enforcement during raids conducted across 8 cities.
In an operation resulting from the intensive efforts of financial crimes units in Istanbul, an electronic money and payment services company alleged to be linked to illegal betting activities was placed under scrutiny. During the investigation process, in line with reports from the Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK), it was determined that the firm in question was used for illegal betting and acted as an intermediary for the laundering of proceeds of crime.
Acting on the information obtained and under the instructions of the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, police launched simultaneous operations in the morning at designated addresses in Istanbul, as well as in Ankara, Antalya, Balıkesir, Bursa, Kocaeli, Muğla, and Tokat.
A total of 37 suspects were detained in the raids. It was noted that the suspects are accused of facilitating illegal betting and playing a role in the transfer of money obtained through illegal means.
Within the scope of the investigation, it was reported that the processing of the detained individuals is ongoing in Istanbul and that investigations into other suspects linked to the gang are continuing.
