Breaking News... Ankara responds sharply to Greece's 12-mile plan in the Aegean

Greece's controversial move to extend its territorial waters in the Aegean Sea to 12 miles has escalated tensions on the Athens-Ankara line. Turkey has provided a firm and clear response to this rhetoric, which was voiced by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis ahead of his visit to Turkey.

In a new statement issued by the Ministry of National Defense (MSB), it was emphasized that unilateral initiatives by Greek authorities will not be accepted by Turkey and are invalid under international law. The MSB statement also included a message that Turkey will continue to protect its national rights and interests with determination, in line with its "Blue Homeland" approach.

The following statements stood out in the announcement:

"Our country's position regarding the rhetoric of Greek politicians about extending territorial waters in the Aegean Sea to 12 miles is clear. As Turkey, we advocate that a fair, equitable maritime jurisdiction sharing in the Aegean, in accordance with the principles of international law, is only possible within the framework of mutual dialogue and good faith. Greece's unilateral actions, claims, and statements that ignore existing disputes and violate the rights of the Turkish side are contrary to international law and are unacceptable. These statements do not produce any legal consequences for our country. The Turkish Armed Forces, in line with the Blue Homeland concept, continue their duty to protect all kinds of rights and interests of our country in its maritime jurisdiction areas with determination and resolve."

The MSB statement also expressed that a pro-peace stance must be supported by dialogue and compromise. It was emphasized that Turkey opposes oppressive and imposition-based approaches that threaten peace in the region, and that lasting solutions can only be reached through good-faith contacts and mutual steps.

INTEGRATION IN SYRIA ALSO ADDRESSED

On the other hand, the ministry also touched upon recent developments in Syria. It was noted that the integration agreement signed between the Syrian Government and the Syrian Democratic Forces on January 30 was welcomed by Turkey. The statement drew attention to the importance of policies that will ensure the country's territorial integrity and the principle of "one state, one army."

The Ministry of National Defense reiterated that they are determined to closely monitor both the Aegean debates and the process in Syria, and to protect the country's interests within the framework of international law.
