BTK issues 'catalog crimes' warning to Telegram: Access ban on the agenda

Instagram, which has 57 million users in Turkey, was shut down on August 2 citing 'catalog crimes'. Instagram was reopened after 8 days.

According to a report in the pro-government newspaper Sabah, the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) has also warned Telegram over 'catalog crimes.'

According to the report, BTK has sent over a thousand notifications to Telegram's headquarters in the UK, as the platform has no representative in Turkey.

NO RESPONSE RECEIVED

The authority stated that drug trafficking, prostitution, gambling, and the trade of pedophilia videos were taking place, and requested that these messaging channels be shut down. However, no response was received from Telegram.

The report included the following statement: ''It has been learned that if Telegram does not agree to cooperate with BTK and police units in the fight against crime and continues to facilitate the trade of substances that poison young people, such as drugs, an access ban could be imposed here as well in a short time."
