Davutoğlu: 'I am against all trustee appointments'

Davutoğlu: 'I am against all trustee appointments'

Reactions continue unabated following the appointment of trustees to the Mardin Metropolitan Municipality, Batman Municipality, and Şanlıurfa Halfeti Municipality, following the case of the Esenyurt Municipality. Trustee appointments were also on the agenda of Future Party leader Ahmet Davutoğlu.

Speaking at the joint parliamentary group meeting of the Felicity and Future parties, Davutoğlu said, "I declare here that we oppose all trustee appointments, regardless of how they are made."

In his statement, Davutoğlu recalled the words of MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli: "As taboos are lifted, as dogmas are broken, as the status quo is pierced, as people treat each other honestly, and as they speak freely about what is on their minds, it is easier to move forward with small steps from one point of agreement and consensus to another."

Davutoğlu spoke as follows:

"Good for you, well said Bahçeli, friends, applaud these sentences. This is what we are already saying; we say let taboos be lifted; do not do this, do not speak with taboos and symbols, do not accuse one another. What did we experience before the 2023 elections? I do not want to recount what we went through in front of mosques and on the streets. There are lessons in Bahçeli's words for that mosque congregation as well. There is a very important statement and a sentence that everyone missed: 'Moving forward with small steps.' With small steps, but let us move forward. Well, is there any consistency between these words and the trustee appointments? While applauding these words, I declare here that we oppose all trustee appointments, regardless of how they are made."

'THE STATE IS NOT A PLACE FOR ARM WRESTLING'

Evaluating Bahçeli's remarks regarding the terrorist leader Öcalan, Davutoğlu said the following:

"If the President has one thing in mind regarding the current process and Mr. Bahçeli has another, my advice to them is: please sit down and resolve this confusion. We also need to know who we are dealing with, what we are discussing, what we are supporting, and what we are criticizing. Another possibility is that there is an arm-wrestling match going on at the top. Mr. Bahçeli is taking an initiative, the President is not opposing this initiative; but he is also not speaking out against steps that would sabotage that initiative. In response, Mr. Bahçeli confirmed yesterday, 'I stand by my word.' If such a situation exists, it is very dangerous; the state is not a place for arm wrestling. Sit down and reach an agreement so that we know what you are doing."
