Epidemic claims stir the capital: Reports of nausea and diarrhea on the rise in Ankara
In recent days, numerous citizens have claimed on social media that they are suffering from nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and high fever, with some users alleging that emergency rooms have become overcrowded. Following water outages, claims regarding tap water have also sparked debate; however, ASKİ has stated that the mains water is analyzed regularly. The Ministry of Health and the Ankara Provincial Health Directorate have not issued any official statement confirming these claims.
A transformer failure in Ankara's Altındağ and Mamak districts on July 26-27 resulted in water outages lasting approximately three days. After water service was restored to the network, some citizens claimed that the water flowing from their taps was cloudy, dirty, and foul-smelling. The posts, which spread rapidly on social media, triggered debates regarding water quality.
CLAIMS REGARDING WATER QUALITY ON THE AGENDA
The Ankara Water and Sewerage Administration (ASKİ) stated in a release on the matter that the mains water is monitored through regular analyses and that water quality is guaranteed.
Despite this, some social media users claimed that the health issues they were experiencing were not due to seasonal factors, but rather the mains water being used.
SIMILAR COMPLAINTS SHARED ON SOCIAL MEDIA
Numerous people on the X platform claimed to be experiencing similar symptoms.
The most frequently mentioned complaints in these posts included nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fatigue, and high fever. Some users alleged that their illnesses began after consuming iced beverages or using the mains water.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT AWAITED
While the increasing number of social media posts has caused public concern, no confirmed official statement has been issued by the Ministry of Health or the Ankara Provincial Health Directorate regarding a possible epidemic or health issues stemming from drinking water in the city.
While a new assessment from authorities is awaited, the claims circulating on social media have not been verified by official bodies to date.
