Former AKP member Emin Şirin comments on the 50+1 disagreement between Erdoğan and Bahçeli: 'Is Erdoğan uncomfortable with certain actions by individuals close to the MHP?'
Following President Erdoğan's remarks that the 50+1 rule should be changed, his alliance partner, MHP leader Bahçeli, issued a statement in the exact opposite direction. Former AKP deputy Emin Şirin evaluated MHP leader Bahçeli's support for the 50+1 rule after Erdoğan's "it would be appropriate to change the 50+1 requirement" statement for 12punto: "Is Erdoğan uncomfortable with certain actions by individuals close to the MHP? Or is he trying to open the door to other negotiations regarding a new constitution?"

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan sparked public debate with his words: "It would be appropriate to change the 50+1 requirement. If the person who receives the majority is elected, the presidential election would also be quick, would not be troublesome, and would not lead to wrong paths. The current 50+1 obligation leads parties to wrong paths."
Making statements at his party's group meeting, MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli stated that there was no change in his party's past views, emphasizing that the system should continue by saying, "We are not electing a member of parliament, a mayor, or a village head. We are electing a president who will represent the entirety of the nation. As the MHP, we hold the same view today as we did yesterday."
Emin Şirin, one of the 22nd-term deputies of the AKP, evaluated Bahçeli's support for the 50+1 rule following Erdoğan's "it would be appropriate to change the 50+1 requirement" statement for 12punto.
'WILL THE DOOR TO OTHER NEGOTIATIONS BE OPENED?'
Şirin said, "When I listened to Bahçeli's speech, I understood that not an inch of progress had been made on the 50+1 issue. I am of the opinion that this issue will be removed from the agenda in a short time," and added the following:
"The issue that needs to be focused on here is this; why did Recep Tayyip Erdoğan bring this issue to the agenda when there are still 4.5 years until the presidential elections? Is Erdoğan uncomfortable with certain actions by individuals close to the MHP? Or is he trying to open the door to other negotiations regarding the new constitutional amendments to be discussed after the local elections? We will see all of this soon."
'THE 50+1 RULE SHOULD ALSO BE APPLIED WHEN ELECTING MAYORS'
Emin Şirin, who ignited a new controversy, stated, "I'll set aside the presidential election; the 50+1 rule should even be applied when electing mayors. But at the point we have reached, unfortunately, majoritarian democracy no longer exists in our country."
