Funeral ceremony for Korhan Berzeg to be held on May 27

The skull and 12 bones of economist Prof. Dr. Korhan Berzeg, who was determined to have passed away 316 days after going missing in Balıkesir, which were found by a stream 3.5 kilometers from his home, will be buried on May 27 next to the grave of his father, Muhsin Berzeg, in the Armutlu neighborhood.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Korhan Berzeg, who had come from Istanbul to his summer house in the Gönen district of Balıkesir and went for a walk with his Doberman dog 'Tina' on June 17, 2023, was found 312 days after his disappearance on April 23 near Fındıklı Creek, 3.5 kilometers from his home. Items found included credit cards from 3 different banks belonging to him, 1 bank card, a fragmented Istanbul free public transport card, an Istanbul Mavi card, a driver's license, an ID card, five 10 TL banknotes (one of which was fragmented), one 100 TL banknote, one 50 TL banknote, one vehicle key, and various other keys.

When bone fragments were also found in the area, the search efforts, which had been terminated 130 days after Berzeg went missing, were resumed. The personal belongings and clothing fragments found, along with bone fragments believed to belong to the hip and rib cage that had no tissue on them, were sent to the Istanbul Council of Forensic Medicine. During this process, a blood sample was taken from Berzeg's daughter, Nisa Berzeg, who came to Turkey from England. The examination revealed that the DNA from the bone fragments matched the blood sample taken from his daughter. Thus, it was confirmed that Korhan Berzeg had died 316 days after he went missing.

While the area scanning work, carried out with 3 cadaver search dogs and 62 gendarmerie personnel, was concluded 319 days after Berzeg went missing, the examination conducted at the Istanbul Council of Forensic Medicine on all found bones, clothing fragments, and personal belongings was completed on May 14. It was confirmed that the skull and 12 bones found belonged to Korhan Berzeg.

While the exact cause of Korhan Berzeg's death could not be determined following the examination at the Istanbul Council of Forensic Medicine, the Berzeg family's lawyer, Emre Akkaş, who spoke to a DHA reporter over the phone, said that the bones and skull handed over to Korhan Berzeg's family would be laid to rest on May 27 in the Armutlu neighborhood, where he was born and died, next to the graves of his father, Muhsin Berzeg, who passed away in 1940, and his grandfather, Kemal Berzeg, who passed away in 1968.

Berzeg will be laid to rest following the funeral prayer to be held at the Armutlu Neighborhood Mosque at noon.
