Gendarmerie had denied it: 'Handcuff torture' against Tayfun Kahraman recorded in hospital report

Meriç Demir Kahraman announced that Gezi Park trial prisoner Tayfun Kahraman, who went for a routine neurology check-up due to his MS condition, was kept in handcuffs for 6.5 hours.

Meriç Demir Kahraman, who announced that her husband was subjected to 'handcuff torture,' stated that the handcuffs were applied in a way that would stop blood flow to his wrists and cause physical harm, and that they were tightened further when he objected.

A judicial investigation was launched by the Silivri Chief Public Prosecutor's Office and an administrative investigation by the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the matter.

GENDARMERIE HAD DENIED IT

While the Gendarmerie General Command denied the 'handcuff torture' allegations, Meriç Kahraman shared the report regarding the mistreatment her husband was subjected to.

'HANDCUFF TORTURE' HOSPITAL REPORT EMERGES

The report prepared at the Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine Neurology Polyclinic stated, 'The patient's routine MS check-ups are continuing at our center. The patient's examination dated 28/8/2024 was conducted in the room together with Gendarmerie personnel (with 4 people). No abnormalities were found in the neurological examination, but there is significant redness on both wrists, more pronounced on the right.'

'SECONDARY TRAUMA HAS BEEN RECORDED IN WRITING WITH THIS REPORT'

Kahraman said the following in her social media post:

'We hope the new judicial year will be fair.

Attached, I present to the public and the competent authorities the report regarding the treatment contrary to human rights that my husband Tayfun Kahraman was subjected to.

The violation of patient-doctor confidentiality by the presence of 4 law enforcement personnel in the room during the examination, as well as the secondary trauma caused by the excessive tightening of the handcuffs on both of Tayfun's hands, has been recorded in writing with this report.

The legal process has begun, and we are following it.

We know no other way than the law and dialogue.

My husband Tayfun Kahraman is, first and foremost, innocent; there is not a single concrete piece of evidence regarding the allegations against him. Furthermore, he has not been tried fairly; this constitutional right of his has been violated. He remains imprisoned because the necessary legal steps have not been taken. For 28 months, he has been deprived of his freedom and our daughter Vera.

Tayfun's innocence is documented; information and documents regarding his innocence have been shared with the entire public.

Secondarily; Tayfun Kahraman is an MS patient, and his patient rights and human rights have been violated.

We are waiting patiently for the day my husband Tayfun Kahraman will return home to us and to our daughter Vera safe and sound.

As honorable, equal, and free citizens of the Republic of Turkey, we call out to all authorities, politicians, and judges: Ensure that justice, which is long overdue, is served as soon as possible; let this persecution end.'
