German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier: 'As two countries, we are indispensable to each other'
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier stated, "(Turkey-Germany) As two countries, we are indispensable to each other; we need each other."
Stating that German-Turkish relations are based on a long and rich history, Steinmeier said, "It was very important for me to come to Turkey on the 100th anniversary of the start of our diplomatic relations."
Steinmeier noted that these relations are not only between states and governments, pointing out that human relations, in particular, make the ties between the two countries special.
'NO OTHER COUNTRY HAS SUCH FAMILIAL RELATIONS'
"Germany does not have such intense friendly and familial relations with any other country in the world (as it does with Turkey)." Steinmeier remarked, reminding that approximately 3 million people of Turkish origin have lived in Germany since the labor agreement was signed in 1961.
Steinmeier stated that the two countries should exchange information and views within NATO, the G20, and especially in the face of developments in the Middle East, adding, "(Turkey-Germany) As two countries, we are indispensable to each other; we need each other."
'WE MUST IMPROVE THE HUMANITARIAN SITUATION IN GAZA'
Touching upon the latest developments in Gaza, Steinmeier said, "We must improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza; we are obliged to improve it."
Emphasizing that the spread of the war to the region must be prevented, Steinmeier noted the following:
"Without a political perspective for the Palestinians, security cannot be ensured for Israel in the medium or long term. Ultimately, this political perspective can only be a two-state solution; we must take steps in this direction again.
In the short term and during these very difficult times, we must restore importance and momentum to Turkish-German relations. After our very intense and detailed discussions, I would like to thank you with all my heart once again for your invitation."
