Mehmet Demir, who works as a service staff member at an institution in Denizli, traded in his old phone for a new one about a year ago. Demir forgot to delete his personal information, bank passwords, and internet banking details from the phone he traded in. Hackers seized Demir's information and cloned his phone number.

''BURN IT IF NECESSARY''

Using Demir's information, the hackers withdrew large sums of money from four banks and also made money transfers through his accounts on different dates. Facing a debt of approximately 1 million lira, Demir was also hit with enforcement proceedings initiated by the banks. Noting that there are 15 enforcement files opened against him, Demir could not hold back his tears, saying, "Do not sell your old phones, do not give them to anyone. Break them and throw them away, burn them if necessary. I have been burned, let no one else be burned. I am going through very difficult and troubled days."

INITIATED LEGAL PROCEEDINGS

Pointing out that he has initiated legal proceedings regarding the hackers who defrauded him by using the information on the phone he forgot to wipe, Demir said, "On October 19, 2022, I had an old phone. I traded in my phone. However, I forgot to delete the information inside my phone. My internet banking and credit card passwords were all inside the phone. The hacker who seized this used all my information to create a money movement of one trillion [lira] in my accounts. Because of this, I fell into enforcement. I have fifteen enforcement proceedings. My advice to the public is, please, whatever you do, do not give away your old phones. Break them, throw them away, but do not give them away. My life has been ruined. Let no one else's life be ruined. I have a debt of approximately one trillion to four banks. The hacker had already ruined my life in one way or another. During this difficult process, I also divorced my wife. They killed me, they killed me again. It is that simple. They all came to enforcement. I have 15 enforcement proceedings. I did not know what to do. I no longer have the strength to endure. Please, show me a way, a solution. Now, in this difficult process, I have a house in my village that I inherited from my grandfather, but an enforcement order came for it. The bank put my house up for sale. The prosecutor's office took my phone. My phone still has not been returned."
