Izmir political circles stir: Cemil Tugay's latest move strengthens claims of a switch to the AKP!
As rumors regarding the political future of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Cemil Tugay intensify, his recent actions have sparked new debates behind the scenes.
Following a decision of absolute nullity, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Cemil Tugay resigned from the Republican People's Party (CHP) in June, subsequently announcing that he would continue his path as an independent. Although Tugay had made statements suggesting he would join a party allegedly to be founded by Özgür Özel, he later decided on July 24 not to join the NEW Party formed by 91 former CHP deputies and to continue as an independent.
Recently, claims that Tugay would switch to the AKP during the event to be held on August 14 for the AKP's anniversary have returned to the agenda. During this process, notable developments have occurred in the mayor's communication with his inner circle.
Tugay's failure to answer calls from politicians involved in the NEW Party and figures close to Özgür Özel, as well as his departure from the "Izmir Metropolitan Communication" WhatsApp group at the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, have further strengthened the claims that he will switch to the AKP. His quiet and sudden exit from the WhatsApp group has led to assessments in political circles that the mayor is preparing for a new phase.
While the discussions continue, it is being rumored that not only Cemil Tugay but also a number of CHP-led municipalities could join the ranks of the AKP at the event to be held on August 14. No new statement regarding these claims has yet come from the Tugay camp.
