Ministry bans the use of food additives in certain regional products
The use of all food additives in certain regional products has been banned. The Turkish Food Codex Regulation on Food Additives by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has been published in the repeated issue of the Official Gazette and has entered into force.
Food business operators are required to comply with the provisions of the regulation announced by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry by April 1, 2024.
With the regulation prepared within the framework of harmonization with EU legislation, the list of additives permitted for use in foods, conditions of use, and labeling rules have been determined.
KÖME, WALNUT SAUSAGE, TAHINI, BAKLAVA...
Accordingly, the scope of the annex titled "Certain products produced in Turkey and the food additives prohibited for use in them" has been expanded, and the use of all additives in regional products such as clotted cream (kaymak), tahini, baklava, köme, fruit leather (pestil), bastık, walnut sausage (cevizli sucuk), and similar products has been banned.
The use of titanium dioxide, known as a coloring agent, has also been banned, and food cannot be produced with this additive starting from April 1, 2024.
In unripened cheeses other than soft fresh cheeses, additives included in Group 1 of the regulation (excluding calcium chloride), phosphoric acid-phosphates, and polyphosphates cannot be used.
In döner and poultry döner (raw/prepared meat mixture), certain E-coded additives with thickening functions and water-retention properties will not be allowed.
In fermented sausages, the use of emulsifiers has been banned, and in heat-treated meat products, the use of the E427 (Cassia gum) additive, which has thickening functions and water-retention properties, has been prohibited.
Coloring agents cannot be used in the coating of pastırma and in regional halva varieties (cheese, palace, çekme, tahini, summer halva, and similar).
DEADLINE IS APRIL 1, 2024
Food business operators are required to comply with the provisions of the regulation by April 1, 2024.
On the other hand, the Turkish Food Codex Regulation on Food Additives dated June 30, 2013, has been repealed.
