New president of the Constitutional Court to be determined by election on March 21
The term of Constitutional Court President Zühtü Arslan is coming to an end. The new president will be determined by an election to be held on March 21.
The presidential election process began on February 20 due to Arslan's 12-year term at the High Court expiring on April 20.
In this context, March 21 has been set as the date for the election to choose the new president of the Constitutional Court.
Arslan will not be able to be a candidate in the election because his term is expiring, but he will be able to cast a vote. Other members of the High Court will be eligible to be candidates for the presidency.
In the election to be held in the General Assembly, the candidate who secures an absolute majority by receiving the votes of at least 8 out of 15 members will assume the office of President of the Constitutional Court for a 4-year term.
If no member can secure the required majority, the elections will continue.
ARSLAN WAS ELECTED PRESIDENT 3 TIMES
Zühtü Arslan was first elected President of the Constitutional Court on February 10, 2015, while continuing his tenure as a member of the Constitutional Court, which began on April 20, 2012.
Following the expiration of his term, Arslan was elected president for a second time after receiving an absolute majority of the votes in the election on January 25, 2019, and finally became the president of the Constitutional Court for a third time after receiving the votes of 8 out of 15 members in the election held in the Constitutional Court General Assembly on February 2, 2023.
