'One of the Pentagon's secret projects': Allegations emerge of a secret US military base in Israel
It has been alleged that the US maintains a secret military base in Israel, the existence of which it has denied, to counter "potential threats from Iran."
A report by the US website The Intercept states that the US Department of Defense has been "quietly continuing the construction of a secret base" atop Mount Har Keren in the Negev Desert in southern Israel.
The report notes that the US base, codenamed "Site 512," located 32 kilometers from Gaza in the Negev Desert, is a radar facility that monitors potential missile attacks against Israel.
However, it was emphasized that "Site 512 did not detect any of the thousands of Hamas rockets fired at Israel on October 7 because it was focused on Iran, which is more than a thousand kilometers away."
The report points out that while the US administration has stated it has "no plans to send troops to Israel for the war against Hamas," a secret US military presence already exists in Israel.
It was reported that the US Department of Defense indirectly referred to this base in a $35.8 million contract awarded on August 2 for the construction of a "life support area" in Israel.
PENTAGON DID NOT RESPOND
It was noted that the Pentagon has attempted to conceal the true purpose of this project by labeling it in its records as "one of the secret projects around the world."
It was emphasized that budget documents reviewed by The Intercept reveal that this project is part of Site 512.
The report, which states that the Pentagon did not respond to a "request for comment" on the matter, also noted that the US rarely acknowledged its military presence in Israel in 2017 due to the opening of a base by the two countries, but denied it a day later, announcing that the site was merely a "life support facility" for US soldiers working at an Israeli base.
