Özgür Özel clarifies 'if I am losing, I am the one losing' remarks: 'We are learning the lessons we need to learn'
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel had responded to criticisms regarding his standing to welcome AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Parliament, stating, "We stood up not out of respect for Mr. Erdoğan personally, but out of respect for the office of the presidency and the voters who elected him. If we are losing, I am the one losing. I will pay the price, I will be the one held accountable." Özel has now issued a new statement following the criticism.
Özgür Özel had responded to criticisms regarding the 'standing up' incident by saying, "If we are losing, I am the one losing. I will pay the price, I will be the one held accountable." Özel has now clarified those remarks.
Writing on his social media account to clarify his statements, Özgür Özel wrote the following:
“Today, I was saddened to see that an expression I used was taken out of context and circulated, and was misunderstood.
Before the local elections, we set out for a politics that is free from petty squabbles and polarization, and that only speaks to the nation's agenda.
We made our party the leading party after 47 years with the policy we followed by saying, “We will not have personal fights with anyone; we will only fight for the rights of the nation.”
We have seen in all the research conducted after the election that the steps we have taken have not caused our party to lose, but on the contrary, have helped it gain.
I explained this today by saying, "We are not losing anything, we are not losing anything at all."
Today, in response to some questions about the criticisms, when I said, “If I am losing, I am the one losing,” I was referring to some of the harsh criticisms directed at me personally.
I would like to state once again that if there is any loss due to these debates, it belongs to me because of the criticisms I have been subjected to; we have not caused any loss to our party's march to power, and we will not do so.
We welcome all the criticisms we receive with respect and are learning the lessons we need to learn. By listening to the voice of the nation, we will carry our party, which we made the leading party of Turkey after 47 years, even further.
Just as on the night of March 31, the party's lights will not go out on the night of the general elections, and the CHP will be the leading party on TRT screens once again.”
Today, I was saddened to see that an expression I used was taken out of context and circulated, and was misunderstood.
