Parliament Speaker to be elected tomorrow: Parties' candidates are set! How will the process work?

The election for the Speaker of the Parliament will take place this week in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. The voting in the General Assembly will be held tomorrow.

The AKP has re-nominated the current Speaker, Numan Kurtulmuş. The MHP announced that it would not field a candidate and would support Kurtulmuş.

Opposition parties have determined their own candidates. The CHP's candidate is Artvin Deputy Uğur Bayraktutan, while the DEM Party has nominated Diyarbakır Deputy Osman Cengiz Çandar, the IYI Party has nominated Istanbul Deputy Mustafa Cihan Paçacı, and the New Way Party has nominated Mehmet Kahraman.

HOW WILL THE ELECTION PROCESS WORK?

The Speaker of the Parliament will be elected by secret ballot. In the first two rounds, a candidate must receive the votes of two-thirds of the total number of members, which is at least 400 deputies, to be elected.

If this majority is not achieved, the process will move to the third round. In the third round, an absolute majority, meaning at least 301 votes, will be required. If no result is obtained then either, the two candidates who received the most votes will proceed to the fourth round. In this round, the candidate who receives the most votes will be elected Speaker of the Parliament.

The total number of seats held by the AKP and MHP in Parliament is 320. Therefore, the election is expected to conclude in the third round.
