TurkStat announces brain drain rate for higher education graduates: Most go to the USA
According to the Turkish Statistical Institute's (TurkStat) 2021-2023 higher education brain drain data, the emigration rate of graduates rose from 1.6% in 2015 to 2% in 2023. During this period, the brain drain rate was 1.6% for women and 2.4% for men.
The Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) has announced its higher education brain drain statistics for the 2021-2023 period.
Accordingly, the brain drain rate for higher education graduates was 1.6 percent in 2015, rising to 2 percent in 2023. This rate was recorded as 1.6 percent for women and 2.4 percent for men.
The field of education and training with the highest brain drain rate was information and communication technologies at 6.8 percent. This was followed by engineering, manufacturing, and construction at 4.4 percent, and natural sciences, mathematics, and statistics at 2.6 percent.
When examining the brain drain rates of graduates, the undergraduate program with the highest brain drain rate was recorded as molecular biology and genetics at 17.9 percent. This department was followed by bioengineering at 10.2 percent, business engineering at 9.8 percent, electronics engineering at 9.1 percent, mathematical engineering at 8.9 percent, and computer engineering at 8.4 percent.
GRADUATES MOSTLY GO TO THE USA
The country most preferred by those who completed an undergraduate program for emigration was the USA at 21.4 percent. The USA was followed by Germany at 17.5 percent, the United Kingdom at 11.2 percent, the Netherlands at 6.9 percent, and Canada at 4.9 percent.
While the undergraduate program with the largest share among graduates emigrating to the USA and Canada was business administration, those who graduated from the computer engineering department most preferred Germany, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands.
