Expectations for improvement in current account deficit continue
Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek, in his assessment of Turkey's current account deficit figures, stated that they project the ratio of the current account deficit to GDP to remain at sustainable levels in 2026.
Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek evaluated the balance of payments data for the November 2025 period via his social media account. In light of the data announced by the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey, Şimşek noted that the annual current account deficit for the month in question stood at 23.2 billion dollars.
Minister Şimşek pointed out that one of the most significant reasons for the 12.8 billion dollar increase in the annual current account deficit during the January-November 2025 period was the 6.4 billion dollar deterioration observed in the gold balance. He stated that price increases were particularly influential in gold imports.
Emphasizing that despite difficulties in global trade and the rise in demand for gold, Turkey's exports have maintained a resilient outlook and a positive performance has been achieved in tourism revenues, Şimşek indicated that with these developments, the current account balance is being kept under control.
Şimşek included the following statements in his assessment:
"Thanks to the improvement in the technology composition of industrial production and exports, as well as low energy prices, the supportive outlook in the euro/dollar parity, and the structural steps we have taken, we expect the ratio of the current account deficit to GDP to remain at sustainable levels of approximately 1.5 percent in 2026."
