The request to bring the legislative proposal for raising the lowest pension to the level of the minimum wage to the agenda of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) was rejected.
Yeni Yol Hatay Deputy Necmettin Çalışkan requested that the lowest pension, which is 23,552 lira, be equalized to the 28,075 lira minimum wage and that the holiday bonus paid to retirees also be raised to the level of the minimum wage.
The motion regarding the inclusion of Çalışkan's legislative proposal, which has been waiting to be discussed in Parliament for approximately 18 months, on the General Assembly agenda was not accepted by the votes of AKP and MHP deputies.
According to the report by Veli Toprak from Sözcü, drawing attention to the living conditions of retirees in his speech in Parliament, Çalışkan said, “Our citizens who have served for 30-40 years receive a starvation wage while expecting a second spring. The social state has collapsed, and retirees are left with their heads bowed in supermarket aisles.”
Stating that the retirement period is spent with economic difficulties for many citizens, Çalışkan argued that retirees experience anxiety about making ends meet even during holiday periods.
In the Global Pension Index assessment mentioned in the sources, it was stated that Turkey ranks last among the European countries examined in terms of its pension system. It was noted that criteria such as the adequacy of retirement income and the financing structure were taken into account in the index.
