New formula for retiree raises: Gradual high increase on the table

New options have come to the agenda in the study regarding the salary regulation that millions of retirees are waiting for. According to information reflected in Ankara's political circles, while welfare share and flat-rate raise formulas are being evaluated to improve retiree pensions, the option of a higher gradual increase, especially for retirees over 65, is being emphasized.

It is stated that the study is being shaped as a package that considers the needs of different retiree groups within the framework of SGK budget possibilities. With the options on the table, the goal is to both raise base salaries and provide additional support on top of existing increase rates.

FORMULAS ON THE TABLE

According to the information obtained, one of the strongest topics in the regulation is the welfare share. In addition to this, a flat-rate raise is also among the possibilities. If this formula is implemented, it is expected that the increase will be reflected not only on a percentage basis but also in a way that provides a certain base support to all retirees.

One of the striking topics is the age criterion. Due to the fact that the employment opportunities of retirees over 65 decrease and they are in a more economically vulnerable group, it is being evaluated to give this segment a higher welfare share. In this context, it is stated that a gradual increase formula based on age groups and income levels could be applied.

SGK expert İsa Karakaş also drew attention to the difference between the lowest retiree pension and the hunger threshold in his assessment regarding salary improvements. Stating that the hunger threshold is 37 thousand 801 TL and the lowest retiree pension is 23 thousand 552 TL, Karakaş said, “There is a huge difference in between. Because when we say hunger threshold, we are only talking about kitchen expenses.”

Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz stated that retirees are prioritized in the 2027 budget and said, “We have prepared the budget based on providing our retirees with an opportunity above the increase that will come with inflation.”

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also said in his statement after the Cabinet Meeting that financial opportunities have been created to improve the situation of retirees in the 2027 budget. Erdoğan expressed his hope that the necessary legal regulation would be implemented by the end of the year with the discretion of the Parliament, “within the framework of justice and fairness.”

The final scope of the regulation, the rate of increase, and the details regarding which retiree groups it will be applied to are expected to become clear with the budget studies and the legal preparation process.
