New formula for the minimum wage affecting millions! Different wages for each sector on the table

Work is underway on alternative models for changing the minimum wage system. One of the topics on the government's agenda is the implementation of a regional and sectoral minimum wage that takes into account the cost structure of sectors and the economic conditions of cities.

During the preparation process, different scenarios are being considered in line with the needs of the labor market. The goal is to create a balance that will increase the competitiveness of businesses and support employment while protecting the purchasing power of employees.

BALANCE BETWEEN WORKER AND EMPLOYER WILL BE OBSERVED

Within the scope of the models being evaluated, separate applications are being focused on, particularly for sectors where production costs are high and for regions where living expenses vary.

It is planned to take the opinions of worker and employer representatives before any potential regulation. The aim is to ensure that employees do not suffer a loss of rights and that employers can continue their production activities in a sustainable manner.

GLOBAL EXAMPLES ARE BEING EXAMINED

According to the report by Sabah, not only economic data in Turkey but also wage systems applied in different countries are being examined during the preparation process. Through the analyses conducted, the aim is to determine the model most suitable for Turkey's economic structure.

Once the studies are completed, the economic management will make the final decision in line with the evaluations of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security and relevant institutions. If the regulation is implemented, its scope, transition process, and audit principles will also be determined separately.

Officials emphasize that there is no finalized decision at the moment, stating that the ongoing work is aimed at determining the most appropriate model that will provide a permanent balance between production, employment, and employee welfare.

SIMILAR APPLICATIONS EXIST IN MANY COUNTRIES

A sectoral or regional wage system is applied in various ways in different countries.

While there is a legal minimum wage nationwide in Germany, a higher base wage is applied in some sectors through collective bargaining agreements.

In Italy and Austria, instead of a national minimum wage, wages are largely determined by sectoral collective bargaining agreements. Belgium, on the other hand, has higher wage applications specific to sectors alongside a national base wage.

Meanwhile, while Mexico is divided into wage zones, a higher minimum wage is applied in border regions. In the USA, in addition to the federal wage, states and some cities can set their own base wages.

In Canada, the minimum wage varies by province, while in Japan, a separate wage tariff is applied for all 47 administrative units. China and India are also among the countries that use different minimum wage systems based on economic conditions and sectors.
