Shocking price gap from field to shelf: Bought for 7 TL, sold for 200 TL

Continuing its market inspections, the Ministry of Trade has identified striking increases in vegetable prices during examinations carried out in Diyarbakır. The audits revealed that products are subject to high price hikes from the time they leave the producer until they reach the consumer.

PRICE CHAIN FOR RED BELL PEPPERS DRAWS ATTENTION

The price journey of red bell peppers drew particular attention during the examinations. It was determined that the product, which was procured from a producer or wholesaler in Karataş for 7 TL, was sold to a chain supermarket by a supplier in Diyarbakır for 30 TL. The same product was found to have risen to as much as 199.99 TL on supermarket shelves.

Green pepper prices were also examined during the audits. It was observed that while this product was supplied to markets at the 20 TL level, the shelf price climbed as high as 249.99 TL.

HIGH INCREASES IN CUCUMBERS AND OTHER PRODUCTS

The examinations were not limited to peppers alone. It was determined that cucumbers purchased from the producer in Ereğli for 5.30 TL rose to as much as 79.90 TL in supermarkets.

Additionally, it was noted that the shelf price of green peppers procured from the Akdeniz district for 130 TL was 249.99 TL.

PROCEEDINGS INITIATED AGAINST COMPANIES

In line with the data obtained, it was assessed that some companies engaged in unfair price increases. In this context, it was announced that the relevant files have been sent to the Unfair Price Evaluation Board.
