Tunç Soyer: We will continue to sell bread for 5 TL

İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer visited the Public Bread Factory, which is affiliated with the company that provides affordable and healthy bread to citizens. Mayor Tunç Soyer, who examined the bread production stages of the factory, was accompanied by a company official.

During Turkey's challenging economic crisis, the Public Bread Factory delivers 120 thousand loaves of bread to citizens' tables daily through 91 Public Bread kiosks. Despite rising input costs, the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality offers 210-gram white and whole wheat bread for 5 TL, 450-gram whole wheat and rye bread for 12 TL, 450-gram gluten-free bread for 20 TL, 90-gram 5-pack hamburger buns for 20 TL, and 1000-gram karakılçık bread for 36 TL at its Public Bread kiosks.

"WE ARE SUPPORTING RATHER THAN COMPETING WITH BAKERS"

Speaking after his visit to the factory, Mayor Soyer stated that the Public Bread Model, implemented with the protocol signed between the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality and the İzmir Bakers' Chamber of Tradesmen in 2022, supports both tradesmen and consumers. Mayor Soyer said, "We are currently producing 85 thousand loaves of bread. We also receive support from other bakeries for around 35 thousand. This means both increasing our capacity and supporting our bakers by utilizing their capacity instead of competing with them."

"WE WILL HOLD OUT AS LONG AS WE CAN"

Stating that they are still selling bread for 5 TL despite rising input costs, Mayor Soyer said, "In this inflationary environment that truly hurts people, we are implementing a price policy that allows our citizens to breathe a little in this cost of living. Because we are a nation that does not eat a meal without bread in the kitchen. Bread is our crown jewel. When it falls to the ground, we pick it up and put it on our heads. It is the most important food item. That is why bread is the product we are most meticulous about and trying to protect in this cost of living. We will hold out as long as we can. We continue not to increase the price. We are trying to sell at a price below the cost. That is why we are struggling, but we are continuing to maintain this with all our might."

"WE ARE INCREASING OUR KIOSK COUNT TO 94"

Mayor Soyer said, "Our citizens should rest assured that they are reaching the cheapest and highest quality bread. We will increase our number to 94 by opening 3 more kiosks next month. As poverty increases and deepens, the solutions we produce develop, and the number of citizens we touch increases. Unfortunately, we are trying to provide services with great difficulty in this cost of living and economic crisis environment. But let no one have any doubt, the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality exists for these days. We will continue to contribute to our families' economies."
