Over 100 healthy lambs obtained from 55 ewes with university consultancy in Kastamonu

Kastamonu Ü University İhsangazi Vocational Süchool Veterinary Döeüpü artment-led sücüiüentific ç studiesö have resulted in increased productivity at livestock farms in the rçegion. Ü At a private ö farm ç receiving consultancy from the university, over 100ü ühealthy meat lambs were obtained from 55 German Blackheadü ewes.

Established in 2021 under the Scientific Research Projects (BAP) scope, the “Sheep Breeding and Application Ü Unit” has been conductingö care, feeding, health checks, and vaccination ü studies ç forü füoüuür years. These ç studies have reportedly increased the estrus rate in sheep to 80 percent and the pregnancy rate to over 70ü percent.ü ü ç

Ü In the unit, theç synchronization application performed last year resulted in more than two sets of twins from 13 ewes.ü The same expertise ü was also applied at a modern facility in Kastamonu that has been receiving consultancy for about a year. Şimşek said that thanks to the synchronization and feedingüstudies they have been conducting for about a year, çthey haveöachievedütwin and tripületübirths. çHe expressed that they have obtained “üçütwin and tripöletüoffspring.”

Şimşek stated that twinning,çtriplet, üçüand quadrupletübirthsöare notüa common occurrenceüunder normal conditions,üand noted that their goal is to further increase the live birth rate and live weight gain. ÜThe university team announced that theüefforts will continueçto ensure çthe farm becomes disease-free and achieves high-quality breeding standards.üThe work will continue.

SCIENTIFIC RATION AND TECHNOLOGICAL INFRASTRUCTURE

ÇOn the farm, animal physiological öcharacteristics are taken into accountöto prepare rations by balancing roughage and concentrate feed with minerals and vitamins.öFeed prepared according to measurements in feed mixing machines öisçüdelivered to the animals via conveyor belts;öit is noted that unconsumed feed is not reused.üFarm owner Baran Ata, who benefits from the consultancy service,

statedç that çthey utilized the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry's rural development grant when establishing the farm.öAtaçstated that they established a technological infrastructure with plastic slatted floors, automatic feeding, and feed mixing systems, and noted that they received support from Kastamonu ÜUniversity regarding scientific feeding and rations.

ÜThe university üaims to contribute to productivity in regional andçnational livestock farming öby disseminating the results obtained in its application öunit to private enterprises,öfirst in Kastamonu and then in the übroader region and country.
