Sivas is talking about this: 2,000-year-old objects found in Divriği Castle
Historical objects unearthed following the conclusion of archaeological excavations in the Divriği district of Sivas, which began in 2008 and lasted for approximately 10 years, have begun to be exhibited.
Many objects recovered from the Divriği Castle Excavation, which began in 2008 in the Divriği district of Sivas and was completed in 2018, are now on display at the Sivas Archaeology Museum.
Among the items on display are plaster reliefs, pipes, jewelry, and a metal object believed to be 2,000 years old. In addition to this object, which is thought to date back to the Urartian period, dozens of artifacts that shed light on history are awaiting visitors at the museum.
'OUR EXCAVATIONS HAVE NOW STOPPED'
Providing information about the Divriği Castle Excavation, Sivas Archaeology Museum Director and Archaeologist Ali Alkan said, “The museum we are in is the Sivas Archaeology Museum, affiliated with our Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The Divriği Castle excavation lasted for approximately 10 years under the direction of Prof. Dr. Erdal Eser. Currently, our excavations have stopped. The excavations continued for a 10-year period, starting in 2008 along with surface surveys.
Divriği Castle is primarily a Mengücek castle. The artifacts we recovered also cover the period of the principalities and the Seljuks. An artifact that may date back to the Urartian period was also found during the excavation. We currently have hundreds of artifacts belonging to Divriği Castle in our storage, but we are exhibiting 43 of them,” he said.
'IT IS THOUGHT TO BE A RULER'S PALACE'
Stating that they found similar plaster reliefs in the Sivas Castle excavation, Ali Alkan said, “We found similar plaster reliefs here to those we found in Sivas Castle. Our plaster reliefs, which point to the existence of a ruler's palace in this castle, are among the finest examples. Similar ones were also found on the Alaeddin Hill in Konya. The reliefs are our most important artifacts. Apart from this, we have an object that we think may belong to the earliest Urartian period. We can say that it is our oldest example,” he stated.
