Major backlash over report cards without Atatürk!

The new assessment system implemented by the Ministry of National Education (MEB) in primary schools has sparked widespread reaction in the educational community and among the public. Within the scope of the system introduced with the new curriculum, the report card practice has been abolished for the first two grades of primary school and replaced with a "student development report."

This change has led to controversy, particularly because the founder of the Republic of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, is not featured on these documents.

According to a report by Ufuk Sepetçi from Cumhuriyet, 3rd and 4th-grade primary school students will continue to receive their classic report cards, which feature an image of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, as they have until now.

However, a different practice has been adopted for 1st and 2nd-grade students who are just beginning their educational journey. Instead of a report card, these students will receive a separate document called a "student development report," which includes academic and developmental assessments.

With the new practice, reports based on the students' development processes are being prepared for 1st and 2nd grades instead of a grading system. These reports aim to evaluate the students' academic, social, and individual development.

However, the design and content of these documents have become the focus of criticism, particularly due to the absence of Atatürk.

ABSENCE OF ATATÜRK DRAWS REACTION

At the center of the reactions is the fact that there is no image or mention of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in the "student development report" given to 1st and 2nd graders.

Educators and parents are criticizing the exclusion of the founder of the Republic of Turkey from this document prepared for the first two grades of primary school. The debates are continuing over symbolic elements as much as the content of the new assessment system.
