Minister Tekin makes statement on school safety and compulsory education

Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin made statements regarding school safety, the parent appointment system, teacher relocation requests, and the duration of compulsory education. Tekin stated that a different model for school safety is being worked on, adding, "As of February, we will be before the public with a different solution."

Stating that the measures taken in schools will not be sufficient on their own, Tekin emphasized that families and technology companies must also be part of the process. Minister Tekin expressed that research on peer bullying shows that a large portion of children are influenced through social media platforms.

In this context, Tekin stated that they have launched the "Parent School" program to involve families in the process. Noting that an action plan has been prepared with 7 ministries regarding school safety, Tekin conveyed that measures have been increased in areas such as school grounds, perimeter security, electronic systems, and security cameras.

COMPULSORY EDUCATION DEBATE

Evaluating the duration of compulsory education, Tekin said that this issue should be discussed in Turkey. Pointing out that young people remain in the education system for a long time with 12 years of compulsory education followed by undergraduate education, Tekin used the expression, "It will definitely come to the agenda in the coming period."

Minister Tekin stated that the parent appointment system is also one of the measures taken within the scope of school safety, pointing to the importance of parents meeting with teachers at designated times. Tekin also said that teachers carry a responsibility for common order and representation within the school.

Speaking about teachers' requests for relocation based on excuses, Tekin stated that vacant positions were opened during the application process and that the majority of the requests were met. Regarding PISA results, Tekin said that there has been a steady rise since 2015, and that as of 2025, Turkey is among the top 15 in all branches.
