The importance of proper nutrition for exam success: Recommendations from an expert
Success during exam periods depends not only on studying but also on proper nutritional habits; Dr. Zeynep Güler Yenipınar, Head of the Nutrition and Dietetics Department at Istanbul Rumeli University, explained the effects of nutrition on mental performance during this critical process.
The success of students preparing for university entrance exams, high school transition exams, and other important academic tests depends not only on their knowledge but also on their lifestyle and, in particular, their proper nutritional habits.
NUTRITION STRATEGY SHOULD BEGIN DAYS BEFORE THE EXAM
According to Yenipınar, making last-minute changes to nutritional habits once exam week begins can be risky. It is of great importance for students to switch to a nutrition plan that does not tire the digestive system, balances blood sugar, and supports brain functions during this period.
Stating that simple carbohydrates should be avoided, Yenipınar said that white bread, desserts, and sugary snacks can cause sudden fluctuations in blood sugar, leading to fatigue and lack of concentration. Instead, she expressed that sources of protein and healthy fats such as eggs, milk, yogurt, fish, walnuts, and almonds should be preferred.

THE NIGHT BEFORE THE EXAM: A LIGHT MENU FOR BOTH BODY AND MIND
It is emphasized that nutrition on the night before the exam plays an important role not only physically but also psychologically. It is noted that consuming heavy, fatty, and spicy foods late at night can cause stomach discomfort and sleep disturbances. A light and balanced dinner that is easy to digest is stated to be ideal for both a restful sleep and mental preparation.
EXAM MORNING BREAKFAST: MUST PROVIDE ENERGY AND BALANCE TOGETHER
Stating that the breakfast on the morning of the exam directly affects mental focus, Yenipınar mentioned that having breakfast about an hour before the exam is the most appropriate timing. She indicated that students should choose a menu they are accustomed to, which is easy to digest and balanced for this meal. Pointing out that excessive caffeine consumption can increase exam anxiety, Yenipınar reminded students that they should not consume any food they have not tried before on the morning of the exam.
WATER IS ESSENTIAL DURING THE EXAM, BEWARE OF SUGARY FOODS
Saying that a small bottle of water must be with students during the exam to prevent lack of concentration, Yenipınar recommended avoiding sudden sugar consumption. She conveyed that although sugary foods provide short-term energy, they can subsequently lower blood sugar rapidly and make focusing difficult. Instead, she stated that having a light snack before the exam would be sufficient.
SLEEP AND MENTAL PREPARATION ARE AS IMPORTANT AS NUTRITION
Dr. Zeynep Güler Yenipınar reminded that exam success is directly related not only to academic knowledge but also to sleep patterns, physical activity, and stress management, expressing that it would be more productive for students to turn to relaxing and calming activities instead of studying until late at night before the exam. Stating that proper nutrition, adequate sleep, and water consumption can directly affect success, Yenipınar concluded her words by saying, “An exam is not just a measurement of knowledge, but also a test of endurance and mental focus. Therefore, do not forget to take care of your body and brain in the best way possible.”
