Last month recorded as the 'hottest May' on record

In a statement from Copernicus, it was noted that the average surface air temperature measured last month was 0.75 degrees above the May average for the 1991-2020 period.

The statement, which included the information that last month was the "hottest May" ever recorded globally, also reported that this marks the 12th consecutive month to be declared the "hottest month" on record.

'THE TRACES OF CLIMATE CHANGE PERSIST'

The statement included the following remarks from Carlo Buontempo, Director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service: "It is shocking but not surprising that we have reached this 12-month streak. While this series of record-breaking months will eventually be interrupted, the overall traces of climate change still persist. There is no sign in sight of a change in this trend."

GUTERRES' MESSAGE

The statement also included the following views from United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres:

"Over the past year, every turn of the calendar has raised the temperature. Our planet is trying to tell us something, but we don't seem to be listening. We are breaking global temperature records and reaping the whirlwind. It is time to act, take action, and achieve results."
