Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu, President of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB), announced that Safranbolu saffron has received geographical indication registration from the European Union (EU).
Safranbolu saffron has become Turkey's 19th product to receive geographical indication registration from the EU.
Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu, President of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey, stated, "Safranbolu saffron has become our first spice registered by the European Union. May it be beneficial to our country. I congratulate everyone who contributed."
Hisarcıklıoğlu noted that efforts are ongoing regarding 45 geographical indications and 5 traditional product names currently in the EU process.
WHAT IS SAFRANBOLU SAFFRON?
The "Saffron" that gives Safranbolu its name is a bulbous plant whose flower stigmas have been used as a spice and food coloring since ancient times. It is believed that the homeland of this plant (Crocus sativus), which is closely related to the crocus, is the Mediterranean and Iran.
The saffron plant, which can grow up to an average of 20-25 cm, blooms with funnel-shaped purple flowers in October after being planted as bulbs in August and September. In the very center of the flowers are three-part, reddish-orange stigmas.
