Critical surge in Ebola outbreak: Call for international support

In the latest assessments regarding the situation, it has been reported that the situation in the country has become increasingly severe since the Ebola outbreak was officially declared on May 15. Authorities emphasize that the outbreak is becoming increasingly difficult to control due to a series of suspected cases and deaths emerging in the eastern Ituri province.

Data from the Ministry of Health shows that the number of people who have lost their lives since the beginning of the outbreak has reached 1,556. While 626 patients have recovered and been discharged to date, it is stated that 807 people are still under observation in isolation.

It has been announced that a rare variant of the Ebola virus, known as "Bundibugyo," has been detected in the country this time. Health authorities report that there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment method for this strain yet. This situation makes the outbreak more difficult to manage under current conditions.

Following the rise in cases that began on May 15, it is reported that health teams are intensifying contact tracing, early case detection, and isolation measures in regions where the disease is spreading and deaths are increasing.

An international public health emergency was declared on May 17 to protect health worldwide. The call from experts has been for increased global health aid and coordination for an effective response.

The Ebola virus is known as a high-mortality disease that causes severe fever and hemorrhagic infection. First identified in 1976 near the Ebola River in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the virus occasionally causes significant loss of life in various parts of Africa. Notably, during the outbreak in West Africa between 2014 and 2017, approximately 30 thousand people contracted the disease, and more than 11 thousand people lost their lives.
