Investigation opened over statements in TikTok broadcast: The decision is in
Esra Gürbüz has been placed under judicial control measures as part of an investigation launched following allegations that derogatory remarks regarding social religious values were made on the social media platform TikTok.
Following a live broadcast on TikTok in Elazığ on July 23, 2026, a legal process was initiated on the grounds that the content included statements targeting the religious sensitivities of society. The Elazığ Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, which conducted the investigation, determined through technical analysis that the person who made the broadcast was Esra Gürbüz.
Gürbüz, who was taken into custody by law enforcement on July 24, was referred to the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. It was stated that an investigation was being conducted against Gürbüz under the third paragraph of Article 216 of the Turkish Penal Code, on charges of "publicly insulting the religious values adopted by a section of the public."
Following the taking of Gürbüz's statement, the court did not find the request for arrest appropriate in accordance with the legislation and decided to apply judicial control measures against the suspect in the form of a travel ban and the obligation to sign in at regular intervals.
