Critical warning from earthquake expert! Points to 3 locations
Following the earthquake in Elazığ, geologist Prof. Dr. Okan Tüysüz made striking statements. Tüysüz commented on the fault line and the region where the earthquake occurred, describing it as a "dangerous zone."
Following the 5.0-magnitude earthquake that occurred in Elazığ, geologist Prof. Dr. Okan Tüysüz shared his assessments. Speaking on a live NTV broadcast, Tüysüz stated, "The expected earthquakes in Elazığ are aftershocks that could reach around magnitude 4. This activity will continue. They could reach up to magnitude 4 and may occur within the first 3 days."
Drawing attention to Bingöl, Palu, and Yedisu, Tüysüz used the following expressions:
"The most significant earthquake in this region is the 2020 Elazığ earthquake. The source of that earthquake was the East Anatolian Fault Line passing around Lake Hazar. Although it was somewhat distant from Elazığ, it caused damage in the city because Elazığ's soil conditions are poor. There were earthquakes on this fault in the 1700s. Earthquakes of magnitude 4-5 occurred in the 2010s. We do not expect today's 5.0-magnitude earthquake to cause damage. We can say that there is no expectation of a larger earthquake on the fault where this earthquake occurred.
The East Anatolian Fault consists of a series of fault segments," said Tüysüz. "We call these fault segments. Once a segment breaks, it does not produce earthquakes for 200-300 years. Since the fault broke in the 2020 earthquake, we did not expect another earthquake in these areas.
However, we have been drawing attention to the Palu-Bingöl-Yedisu vicinity for a long time, both due to the impact the February 6 earthquakes had on the region and the recurrence interval of historical earthquakes. Today's earthquake occurred on a fault that had already broken before.
Looking at it from a regional perspective, the area between Palu and Bingöl has not produced earthquakes for many years; there is a possibility of earthquakes occurring there. Places like Bingöl and Palu need to be prepared for a potential earthquake. We would like to state that this is a dangerous region."
