Statement from the camp of Cem Karaca's wife, İlkim Karaca, regarding the halted film: 'Legal steps have been taken'

Cem Karaca’s wife, İlkim Karaca, had opposed the production of the film 'Cem Karaca’nın Gözyaşları' and taken the matter to court; when the film, signed by Fikri Harika and Aytaç Medya, was released, the court found İlkim Karaca to be in the right and ordered the project to be pulled from theaters.

The ruling prohibited the film from being communicated to the public via cinema, satellite, cable, any form of television broadcast, CD, DVD, or any Internet/Social Media/Digital means. Following this decision, the production companies issued a written statement expressing that they would continue their legal battle against İlkim Karaca and that they believed they would lift the injunction and bring the film back to the audience in the future.

'GROUNDLESS AND UGLY STATEMENTS'

Stating that Emrah Karaca, the son of Cem Karaca, misled the public by holding a press conference on the day the injunction was issued in exchange for a 3.5 million TL collateral and claiming that he had to obtain a DNA report in the past because of İlkim Karaca, Attorney Yasin Gökalp continued his statement as follows:

“The statements made regarding the matter contained unfair and defamatory allegations directed at our client, İlkim Karaca. We absolutely reject such unfortunate and groundless statements. Regarding the statements of Emrah Karaca, who made groundless and ugly remarks despite not being a party to the lawsuit; it must be especially emphasized that our late artist Cem Karaca himself filed lawsuits against Emrah Karaca during his lifetime.

Contrary to what is claimed, our client İlkim Karaca did not bring up a non-existent issue. On the contrary, she ensured that these lawsuits were concluded immediately after Cem Karaca's passing and did not object to the inheritance distribution in any way. Thus, she has already proven that all the problems experienced between the late Cem Karaca and Emrah Karaca were not related to her.

The request for the exhumation of Cem Karaca’s grave and the DNA test was not made by our client İlkim Karaca, but on the contrary, by Emrah Karaca himself, and all these matters are documented in court records. While we do not even feel the need to respond to groundless allegations such as the individual in question accusing our client of theft, we would like to announce that the necessary legal process will be initiated."

'LEGAL STEPS HAVE BEEN TAKEN'

The statement, which drew attention to the film's box office, continued with the following words:

"The defendant companies attempted to take advantage of our lack of any statement due to the confidentiality order in the lawsuits regarding the film about the life of a valuable artist like Cem Karaca, and to engage in advertising, and they were somewhat successful. However, the film's box office figures are clear, and we absolutely do not accept the production companies' attempts to blame their own failures on us.

In conclusion, our client İlkim Karaca, who is Cem Karaca’s wife, has remained silent against the psychological attacks directed at her by the aforementioned individuals since the passing of our late artist due to her love and respect for her husband Cem Karaca, and for the first time, she has set out to seek her rights through legal channels.

Although we have respected the positive or negative decisions made by the Turkish judiciary until now, it is met with great astonishment and deep sadness by us that the opposing parties do not show the same respect and make groundless accusations with the aim of misleading the public by launching a smear campaign.

At this final point, first and foremost, in the face of the disrespect shown to Cem Karaca’s memory and even the attack on the rights of our client İlkim Karaca, the necessary legal steps have been rightfully taken and will continue to be taken if necessary"
