9 years have passed since the murder of journalist Nuh Köklü, a member of the TGC (Turkish Journalists Association).
Köklü was taken from us on February 17, 2015, after being stabbed during a scuffle that broke out when a snowball thrown by him and his friends while playing in Kadıköy hit the window of a local shop.
The TGC issued a written statement on the anniversary of Köklü's death:
"We lost our colleague Nuh Köklü in an incident that has gone down in press history as a hate crime. Journalist Nuh Köklü, who was playing with snowballs in Kadıköy, was stabbed to death by a shopkeeper on February 17, 2015. Nuh Köklü was a good journalist who fought for union organization.
Throughout his life, he strove only for journalism. Nuh Köklü's name was added as the 65th journalist to the Turkish Journalists Association's 'Murdered Journalists' list. His photograph was hung in the Gallery of Murdered Journalists at the TGC Press Museum on August 7, 2015, with a ceremony. We commemorate our colleague Nuh Köklü, whom we lost in a snowball murder, with love and respect on the ninth anniversary of his death.
We remind everyone that the murder of Nuh Köklü was a hate crime, and we emphasize the importance of all politicians staying away from hate speech that could disrupt peace and brotherhood. We continue to call on all parties to take steps to improve democracy so that journalism can be practiced with personal safety in a country where there are no obstacles to freedom of the press and expression."
DİSK Basın-İş also stated in its announcement: "Our journalist friend Nuh Köklü, one of the pioneers of the Sabah-ATV strike, was murdered nine years ago today. We remember our friend, who was stabbed to death because of a snowball he threw, with love, respect, and longing."
WHY WAS NUH KÖKLÜ KILLED?
On February 17, 2015, Nuh Köklü began playing with snowballs with his friends on the street on Karakolhane Street in the Yeldeğirmeni neighborhood of Kadıköy. During this time, one of the snowballs hit the display window of a spice shop on the street. A dispute broke out between the shop owner, Serkan Azizoğlu, who came outside angry at the situation, and Nuh Köklü and his friends.
During the argument, Serkan Azizoğlu went into his shop, came back out with a knife, and stabbed Nuh Köklü in the chest. Nuh Köklü, who was seriously injured, lost his life despite all medical interventions at the hospital. Serkan Azizoğlu was arrested for intentional homicide and sent to prison. Azizoğlu was sentenced to life imprisonment.
WHO WAS NUH KÖKLÜ?
He was born in Ankara in 1968 and graduated from the Istanbul University School of Press and Broadcasting, Department of Radio and Television. He began his career as an editor at Istanbul Life Magazine.
He served as news manager at the same magazine. He worked at Nokta and Express magazines. He took part in the founding of the Birgün newspaper. He worked as an editor at the news site Bianet. He prepared the program "Bir şey daha var" (There is something else) on Açık Radyo. In 2003, he went to Latin America.
He lived in Argentina, Peru, and Uruguay for a year. During his time abroad, he continued to send news reports to Bianet. When he returned to Turkey, he worked at Sabah newspaper. He wrote articles for Radikal 2. In 2009, he was laid off due to the strike at the ATV-Sabah group. At that time, he was the workplace representative for the Journalists Union of Turkey (TGS).
Later, between 2010 and 2014, he worked as a program editor at NTV. He was laid off from his job at NTV on the grounds of downsizing. He did not do any work other than journalism. Throughout his life, he fought to continue his profession. He was 47 years old when he was murdered.
