A collapse occurred in a 7-story building on Doğu Street in the Cevizli neighborhood of Istanbul's Maltepe district.
According to initial information, 2 floors of the building collapsed. Following the incident, numerous search and rescue, fire department, and medical teams were dispatched to the area.
While it was stated that there were people trapped in the building, individuals on the upper floors were rescued through the intervention of search and rescue teams.
ITS FORMER STATE REVEALED
The former state of the 7-story building that collapsed in the Cevizli neighborhood of Maltepe has been revealed. It was learned that there was a textile workshop on the ground floor of the building.
STATEMENT FROM THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE
In a statement made by the Istanbul Governor's Office, it was said, "On Thursday, October 8, 2026, at approximately 05:40, a collapse occurred on three floors of a 7-story building located on Doğu Street in the Cevizli neighborhood of Maltepe district. AFAD, fire department, medical, and police teams have been dispatched to the scene."
3 PEOPLE RESCUED ALIVE
During the search and rescue efforts conducted under the rubble, two women were rescued alive. The medical treatment of the injured is ongoing.

ISTANBUL GOVERNOR'S OFFICE: 8 PEOPLE RESCUED
In a statement made by the Istanbul Governor's Office, it was said, "So far, 8 people, including 3 children, have been rescued alive during the search and rescue efforts. According to Population Registration System data, the building was constructed in 1987 and was built as ground floor + 6 stories. The ground floor is used as a workplace, and the 12 apartments on the upper floors are used as residences."
The statement provided the following information:
"According to Population Registration System data, a total of 33 people live in the building, and citizens living in apartments unaffected by the collapse were evacuated after the incident. 8 out of 14 people living in the 4 apartments in the collapsed section have been rescued alive. Search and rescue efforts for the other 6 people are continuing under the coordination of AFAD."
2 INSPECTORS APPOINTED
Minister of Interior Mustafa Çiftçi announced that an investigation has been launched regarding the collapsed building and that 2 inspectors have been appointed. Minister Çiftçi stated the following:
"Following the building collapse that occurred in Maltepe, Istanbul, we are continuing our search and rescue efforts with great sensitivity and without interruption under the coordination of all our relevant institutions.
So far, 5 of our citizens have been pulled from the rubble alive and sent to hospitals, and 10 of our citizens on the upper floors of the building have been safely evacuated.
Contact has been established with 4 of our citizens who are assessed to be under the rubble. It is estimated that a total of 7 of our citizens may be under the rubble.
Our priority is to reach every one of our citizens under the rubble and reunite them with their families in good health.
Our 2 Civil Service Inspectors, whom we have appointed to clarify every aspect of the incident, have begun their work.
May God grant us the ability to reach our citizens under the rubble as soon as possible and reunite them with their loved ones.
I wish a speedy recovery to our injured citizens and convey my best wishes to our fellow citizens in Maltepe."
2 PEOPLE LOST THEIR LIVES
The Istanbul Governor's Office stated, "One of our citizens has lost their life in the search and rescue efforts carried out in the building that collapsed in Maltepe. The lifeless body of our citizen who lost their life has been removed from the rubble, and search and rescue efforts for 3 people are continuing."
ASLAN: ADDITIONAL FLOORS WERE ADDED LATER
Nuri Aslan, Deputy Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, made a statement regarding the 7-story building in Maltepe, of which 3 floors collapsed. Aslan said, "The building was built in 1987. The basement, ground floor, and the 2 floors above it were built as a proper building according to the engineering and zoning plans of that day, but additional floors were added later."
