Social media fraud network: They posed as an 'international investment firm' to pull off a massive scam
Victim testimonies and documents have been gathered regarding an organized fraud network that allegedly targets victims through social media with promises of high returns. According to the allegations, the network builds trust by impersonating an international investment firm and uses psychological manipulation to steal large sums of money.
It is alleged that victims are being lured into an organized fraud network through a process that begins with posts about "reliable investment opportunities" on social media.
According to the allegations, the fraud chain is initiated via WhatsApp or Telegram links shared on popular Instagram and Facebook accounts. It is claimed that these accounts create a sense of legitimacy by posting general financial content, after which invitation links to investment groups are distributed.
WHAT DO THE VICTIMS SAY?
According to victim testimonies, those who join the groups are in direct contact with individuals introduced as "investment experts"; it is alleged that these individuals initially provide seemingly accurate shareholder analyses, and once trust is established, they steer victims toward high-value investments through VIP offers.
ALLEGATIONS OF CORPORATE IDENTITY THEFT
According to a report by Kübra Karasu from Gdh, documents obtained and victim accounts suggest that the identity of a licensed investment firm, stated to be based in Cyprus, has been stolen and that copies of investment websites have been created using fake web addresses. It is alleged that these fake sites resemble the real ones through minor spelling differences or letter variations, and that trust is established by displaying license numbers and address information.
PSYCHOLOGICAL MANIPULATION AND THE "REFUND" TACTIC
According to the victims, the network carries out a scam on initial small investments and then makes an "initial loss refund" to solidify the victim's trust. Following this refund, victims are pressured to make additional investments, such as taking out loans or selling assets.
MONEY FLOW AND IBAN TRICKS
While it was noted that the submitted receipts were examined, it was stated that different IBAN numbers are used for each transfer, funds are distributed to shell accounts, and legal tracking is made difficult by restricting the descriptions on the receipts. It is alleged that victims are pressured to write only their name and surname on the receipts or to leave them blank.
Investigations suggest that the high "online" counts on Telegram are inflated with bots; that communication is conducted primarily through Cyprus-based phone lines and WhatsApp, thereby obscuring the trail of the actual organizers.
It was reported that the victim profile generally consists of educated individuals with savings, and that the victims are concentrated among soldiers, police officers, doctors, engineers, architects, and civil servants. On the other hand, it is alleged that the fake "expert" identities are portrayed by individuals who are well-versed in financial terminology, claim to have international experience, and possess high powers of persuasion.
FINAL STAGE: ADDITIONAL FEES AND BLACKMAIL FOR THOSE WANTING TO WITHDRAW PROFITS
It is alleged that if a victim wants to withdraw their profit, sudden and seemingly large losses are shown in their accounts; subsequently, an additional payment is demanded on the grounds that the "account is insured," and those who refuse to pay are blocked from withdrawing their money. Furthermore, it was reported that victims are intimidated with phrases such as "MASAK audit" or "e-Devlet reflection."
It was reported that numerous complaints have been filed on platforms like Şikayetvar, that victims have initiated legal proceedings, and that some files have been forwarded to public prosecutors. The receipts, correspondence, and screenshots provided by the victims form the basis for the investigation of the allegations.
AUTHORITIES' TRACKING IS HINDERED
The allegations emphasize that investigations are complicated and evidence collection is difficult due to factors such as funds being distributed to short-lived shell company accounts, the use of foreign phone lines, and bot accounts.
Victim representatives advise being cautious against investment invitations originating from social media, ensuring that receipt descriptions are complete and transparent, avoiding clicking on suspicious links, and not transferring money without verifying official licenses.
