According to a report in BirGün, Hayri Erenay, who was appointed to his first mufti position in Ardahan on February 7, 2022, and subsequently continued his service as a Presidential Mufti, also left his post to become an AKP member of parliament.

During the campaign process, Erenay made notable posts on his social media account. Erenay asked for votes by sharing the signature “AK Party Mersin Parliamentary Candidate Hopeful” alongside images featuring hadiths and verses.

NOT NOMINATED IN THE ELECTIONS

The list of AKP parliamentary candidate hopefuls for Mersin for the May 14, 2023, General Election was finalized on March 26, 2023. Erenay's name was included on the list. However, Erenay was not nominated in the elections. Having failed to be nominated, Erenay had to return to the Presidential Mufti position he had left to become an AKP MP.

It was learned that Erenay was appointed as the Gümüşhane Mufti with a Presidential Decree published on February 28. Erenay announced the appointment decision in a social media post on April 21, stating, “With the proposal of our President of Religious Affairs Prof. Dr. Ali Erbaş and the approval of our President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, we have begun our duty as the Gümüşhane Provincial Mufti following the appointment decree published in the Official Gazette.”
