CHP's Murat Emir on the 'oath' controversy: 'No oath, no record, no validity'

CHP Group Deputy Chairman Murat Emir made statements regarding the agenda at the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM). Emir stated that the oath taken by Akın Gürlek at the TBMM was not entered into the official records.

"Dear colleagues, yesterday's oath did not take place. I wish the Speaker of the Parliament had said a few words about this as well. There is no such thing as an oath like this," Emir said, adding the following:

"The place of the oath in the Constitution and the Rules of Procedure is clear. There is no such thing as an oath like this. Look, the oath was not heard. The oath was taken under duress. The dignity of the General Assembly was not respected. It was done by occupying the podium. And the oath was not entered into the records. You might say, 'Well, what does it matter if it's in the record or not? Who heard it?' Who heard it? The Speaker of the Parliament? The pro-government media? How did those who did not see or hear the AKP occupying the podium hear that oath? I look at the record, it's not in the record!"

"THIS OATH IS INVALID"

Emir added the following by comparing it with past records:

"Look, in the records from June 7, 2023; in all of them, the oaths were entered into the record. The Parliament is serious, these things are done seriously. I mean, you may not care, but we have internal rules. You may violate them every day, but we have a Constitution.

Here is yesterday's record; there is no oath or anything. The record says: 'Akın Gürlek began to take the oath.' Well, what did he say? And then, 'Akın Gürlek continued to take the oath.' What did he say? It is not clear. Then Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Bekir Bozdağ said: 'Best of luck.' 

Here is the record, friends. With this record, no one can be considered to have taken an oath. The Republic of Turkey is not a banana republic. I invite everyone to act sensitively on this matter and not to damage democracy any further."
