CHP leader Özel visits Açık Radyo following license revocation

Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Özgür Özel visited Açık Radyo in Istanbul, whose terrestrial broadcast license was revoked by RTÜK, and met with Açık Radyo Editor-in-Chief Ömer Madra and the staff.

WHAT HAPPENED?

RTÜK had previously issued a 5-day program suspension penalty to Açık Radyo due to the use of the phrase "Armenian genocide" on the "Açık Gazete" program on April 24, and subsequently decided to revoke the radio's license on the grounds that the decision was not complied with.

In the lawsuit filed against the broadcast suspension and fine imposed on Açık Radyo by RTÜK, the Ankara 21st Administrative Court issued a 'stay of execution' on 08.07.2024, a decision which was later appealed by RTÜK.

RTÜK member İlhan Taşcı, in his statement announcing that Açık Radyo's license had been revoked, stated: “RTÜK has revoked Açık Radyo's license. The justification is that the broadcaster did not comply with the board's previous 5-day program suspension penalty for 'inciting the public to hatred and enmity' and continued its broadcasts. However, the broadcaster had paid the fine but did not cut the broadcast. This situation should have been interpreted in favor of the broadcaster.”
