Former Mayor Sami Gökdeniz passes away
Lawyer Sami Gökdeniz, who served as the Mayor of Balıkesir for two terms between 1989 and 1999, has passed away at the age of 78.
It was learned that Sami Gökdeniz, who had been receiving treatment for a vascular occlusion at a hospital in Istanbul for a month and a half, had returned to the Edremit district of Balıkesir, where he fell ill again and was taken to Edremit Körfez Hospital.
Former Mayor Sami Gökdeniz succumbed to a heart condition this morning and passed away.
Sami Gökdeniz lost his daughter, lawyer Ebru Gökdeniz, to a sudden illness in 2019, and his wife, Sevim Gökdeniz, passed away shortly thereafter.
Sami Gökdeniz served as the Mayor of Balıkesir for two terms representing the True Path Party (DYP) and also served as the President of the Union of Municipalities of Turkey during the same period. Gökdeniz, who retired from active politics in 1999, was 78 years old.
