Claims of his release were on the agenda: Verdict reached regarding Selahattin Demirtaş

A verdict has been announced in the case filed against former HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş, who is currently imprisoned at the Edirne F-Type High-Security Closed Penal Institution in connection with a separate file.

VERDICT HEARING HELD IN MERSIN

The verdict hearing for the case in which Selahattin Demirtaş was tried on charges of insulting the President was held at the Mersin 14th Criminal Court of First Instance. While Demirtaş did not attend the hearing, his lawyer was present in the courtroom.

REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL TIME FROM LAWYERS

Taking the floor during the hearing, the defense lawyers stated that they could not prepare a defense against the prosecutor's opinion due to the requests they had submitted to the court in the previous session, and requested additional time. The presiding judge rejected this request, reminding them that time had been granted for a defense against the prosecutor's opinion in the previous hearing.

Following the rejection of the request for additional time, the defense lawyers filed a motion for the recusal of the judge on the grounds that the right to a fair defense had been violated. The court rejected this request as well.

The presiding judge also noted for the record that Demirtaş's request to attend the hearing was denied due to security concerns.

The court panel concluded that the crime of insulting the President had been committed in a chain of events during speeches made in Mersin and Diyarbakır, and sentenced Selahattin Demirtaş to 1 year, 5 months, and 15 days in prison.
