Notable call following Imralı meeting: 'Everyone must take responsibility for the complete removal of weapons'

The DEM Party Imralı Delegation announced that they held a comprehensive meeting with Abdullah Öcalan, the leader of the terrorist organization PKK, after a long interval. In the message released following the meeting, Öcalan's call stood out: "We are on the verge of transforming the historical Kurdish-Turkish alliance into a legal foundation; everyone must do their part for the legal process to begin and for weapons to be completely removed from the agenda."

The full statement made by the DEM Party Imralı Delegation is as follows:

"As the DEM Party Imralı Delegation, we held a comprehensive meeting with Mr. Abdullah Öcalan after a long interval. During the meeting, we discussed in detail the political developments in the region, the construction of a democratic society, the stage reached in the peace process, and how the legal framework should be shaped.

During the meeting, Mr. Öcalan made the following assessments to be shared with the public:

“Our determination to take steps in line with the spirit of the February 27 call and to resolve the issue within the law of brotherhood continues. We are on the verge of transforming the historical Kurdish-Turkish alliance and unity—a historical truth in Anatolia that has never been separated during all critical stages—into a legal foundation. The truth that ‘if you separate the Turk from the Kurd, the Kurd does not remain, and if you separate the Kurd from the Turk, the Turk does not remain’ necessitates the development of a law of common life and equality.

The time has come to create a legal ground where mutual sensitivities are observed. Being aware that there is a historical opportunity to open this path with patience, let us abandon simple, narrow approaches that do not serve the future, and let us weave a common life together. Everyone must do their utmost for the initiation of the legal and judicial process within the framework specified in the report prepared by the TBMM National Solidarity, Brotherhood, and Democracy Commission, for the complete removal of conflict and weapons from the agenda, and for the opening of a brand new page.

The Kurdish-Turkish alliance is the cornerstone of Anatolia's common future. In every step to be taken, we must take the culture of these lands as a basis. It is possible to secure this alliance with permanent legal guarantees through legislative regulations and to live together equally and freely in a democratic republic. It is necessary for negative law to transform into positive law.

History offers us an opportunity to weave a common life and to open a brand new page in equality and justice. I have full faith that we will evaluate this opportunity together.”

As a delegation, we find this important call by Mr. Öcalan to be historical, and we reiterate our determination to continue constructive dialogue with all relevant institutions, especially the TBMM, to advance the process in a results-oriented manner, and to reach a permanent solution based on the law of brotherhood."
