Cumhur Alliance's Demirtaş remarks disturb Cem Küçük: 'If you are releasing him...'

A new debate has begun in politics following the ECHR's ruling on Selahattin Demirtaş. After Bahçeli's statement that 'his release will be for the best,' pro-government journalist Cem Küçük's remark that 'if Demirtaş is being released, then Can Atalay should also be released' drew attention.

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has rejected Turkey's appeal regarding the detention of former HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş. The court's decision has resonated widely in Ankara's political circles.

REJECTION FROM THE ECHR TO TURKEY

The ECHR evaluated Turkey's appeal following its previous ruling of a 'violation of rights' regarding Demirtaş's detention. The court rejected Turkey's appeal and upheld its previous decision.

BAHÇELİ'S STATEMENT ON DEMİRTAŞ

Following the decision, Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Chairman Devlet Bahçeli answered questions from journalists in Parliament. In response to a question about Selahattin Demirtaş, Bahçeli replied, 'His release will be for the best.'

Pro-government journalist Cem Küçük made notable remarks during a television program where he evaluated the ECHR decision. Recalling similar rulings from previous years, Küçük addressed Turkey's approach to ECHR decisions.

Küçük stated the following:

'Last year, the ECHR said to release him, and in 2021, they also said to release him. Why didn't you comply then? If you had complied back then, I would say that Turkey complies with ECHR decisions. I do not find it right for Demirtaş to be released just because there is a process. That would be unfair.'

'PERSONAL AMNESTY IS NOT RIGHT'

In his statement, Küçük noted that law and politics progress according to the conjuncture, emphasizing that the media and the government should act with a conscience.

"You call the man a terrorist, and then it is not right to change your opinion just because politics demands it today. You bring an amnesty for everyone, not for a specific individual. 'Demirtaş is an important figure for Kurdish politics, so let's release him.' If you are releasing him, then release those who are imprisoned for PKK propaganda while being members of the DEM Party as well," he stated.

'IF DEMİRTAŞ IS BEING RELEASED, CAN ATALAY SHOULD ALSO BE RELEASED'

Continuing his remarks, Cem Küçük also brought up the case of Workers' Party of Turkey (TİP) MP Can Atalay, who remains in prison despite a Constitutional Court ruling.

Küçük said, "I find it wrong for Demirtaş to be released solely to make progress in the resolution process. If Demirtaş is being released, Can Atalay should also be released today. He is a member of parliament."
