Journalist İsmail Arı to present defense in court after 75 days

The detention of journalist İsmail Arı, which has been ongoing for approximately two and a half months, reaches a critical stage today. Arı, who was detained in Tokat during a family visit immediately after the Ramadan Feast, was arrested in Ankara on March 23 and sent to Sincan Prison.

Arı faces charges including "Publicly Spreading Misleading Information" and "Violation of Privacy" due to his reporting, statements he has made, and social media posts. The prosecution is seeking a prison sentence ranging from 2 years and 3 months to 8 years and 3 months under these charges.

The hearing will be held today at 14:00 at the Ankara 2nd Criminal Court of First Instance. İsmail Arı will be transferred from Sincan Prison to the Ankara Courthouse for the hearing.

The indictment against Arı was completed on April 24. It is alleged that statements he made on the BirGün TV YouTube channel and certain social media posts constitute criminal elements. The indictment is based on his statements regarding foundations close to the government and three separate social media posts.

The fact that he is being accused due to his journalistic activities has drawn reactions from many professional organizations and the Ankara Bar Association. The Bar and press organizations are demanding an end to his detention and his immediate release.

İsmail Arı has stated that he was forced to sleep on the floor in a crowded ward during his time in prison; in his latest statement, he invited the public and all concerned parties to attend the hearing.
