A new era in free public transport: Changes on the way for those over 65

Recent increases in public transport fares across Turkey have also affected the free transport rights of citizens over 65. While this situation has created significant grievances among retirees, it has been reported that the government will announce a new regulation in December in response to the reactions.

NEW REGULATION STARTS IN 2026

Within the scope of the new regulation, which will come into effect as of January 1, 2026, support payments made to public transport vehicle owners will be increased. An additional monthly payment of 7,792 TL will be made to vehicle owners in metropolitan cities, and 4,675 TL in other provinces. This increase is expected to contribute to service quality by boosting the income of vehicle owners providing public transport services.

INCREASE IN SUPPORT PAYMENTS

With the new regulation, the monthly payment for maritime vessels providing urban public transport services will be increased to 5,845 TL, while this figure will be 7,792 TL for vehicles in Ankara and Istanbul. In other provinces with metropolitan municipalities, the support payment will be raised to 5,845 TL. In provinces without metropolitan municipalities, this payment has been set at 4,675 TL.

WHO IS COVERED?

Individuals with disabilities, relatives of martyrs, veterans, individuals over 65, children under state protection, and those receiving social assistance will be able to benefit from this regulation. Additionally, public service employees will continue to benefit from free or discounted public transport services.
