Approval for massive fine against Google
Advocate General Juliane Kokott of the European Court of Justice has stated that the 4.1 billion euro fine imposed on Google for violating competition rules with its Android operating system is justified.
The European Commission (EC) accused Google in 2016 of abusing its market dominance through its Android operating system. These accusations stemmed from Google offering its own applications pre-installed on Android devices. In 2018, the EU imposed a 4.34 billion euro fine on Google due to these violations. Google appealed this fine and initiated a legal process.
In 2022, the EU General Court ruled that Google had violated competition rules and reduced the fine to 4 billion 124 million euros. However, Google took this decision to the European Court of Justice.
Advocate General Juliane Kokott of the European Court of Justice, based in Luxembourg, evaluated the appeals of Google and its parent company Alphabet and stated that the decision of the EU General Court should be upheld. Kokott's opinion recommends that Google's appeal to the European Court of Justice be rejected and the determined fine be enforced.
