Battery-free sensor capable of generating its own energy from magnetic fields developed
Engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the U.S. have developed a battery-free sensor that can generate its own energy for use in hard-to-reach areas.
According to the news on MIT's website, the heat sensor developed at the university does not require any special installation or maintenance.
When attached to an electrical cable carrying current, the battery-free sensor can generate its own energy by harvesting energy from the magnetic field created around the cable, providing information about power consumption in hard-to-reach parts of machinery, such as a motor's power cable.
ADAPTABLE TO OTHER POWER SOURCES
Engineers installed a network of capacitors and transistors into the system to store energy until the sensor reaches the voltage required for its initial operation, and added a microcontroller to the sensor to prevent the device from overheating.
Encouraging the production of similar devices, the researchers emphasized that the battery-free sensor design could also be adapted to other power sources such as vibrations and daylight, in addition to magnetic fields.
The results of the research were published in the "IEEE Sensors Journal".
